I love decorating my front porch.  Each season or holiday means new decor and I like being able to have different ways to display my signs, wreaths or other decor.

This porch post was the perfect way to hang a small welcome sign and some of my other favorite things.

Plus, it's so easy to make.

What you'll need:

ceiling hooks
4X4 post
construction screws
some scrap wood for the base
wood glue or Liquid Nails
caulk (optional)
a 4X4 piece of wood for the top (I used these)
paint

Start by cutting your 4X4 post to the right size.  I got my post from our local home improvement store off of the scrap pile and it happened to be the perfect size.  If they don't have the correct size, they will easily cut it to size for you.  Mine post stands about 48" high.

Then cut out a base for your post.  I used some leftover 3/4" plywood and cut it to about 8" X 8".  You could use any scrap wood you have laying around, just make sure the wood is sturdy enough and wider than your post.

Attach your base to your post with some screws, making sure that the post is centered on your base.

With your base attached, it will not stand nice and sturdy for you.

Take your post topper and attach it with some wood glue.  You could also attach it with liquid nails or even with screws, but since I had wood glue handy I used that.

Use something heavy to hold the topper in place while it dries.  This is where you could use the caulk if you wish.  I wanted to give my post a more seamless look, so I put caulk around where the topper attached to the post and blended it in with my finger.

When everything has dried completely you are ready to paint it.  I used regular interior paint that I had left over because it was the perfect color that I wanted to use and since it was going to sit on my covered porch, I knew the outdoor elements wouldn't be touching it.

WWhen your paint has dried, you can attach your hooks.  You may need to drill in some  holes to get the screws started or they may just screw right into the wood depending on which screws you chose.

Then you can set it in place and hang up all your pretty pieces from it.

I love that it's so versatile and I can use it for so many different looks and put it in different places to accomodate my other decor.
