After living in the Arizona desert for a few years, I have a new love for cacti!  And when I saw this cactus ice cube mold I had to have it knowing I would use it for something other than ice cubes.

We finally settled on making some pendants with it.  My daughter really wanted a cactus necklace and I wanted some fun earrings, so we made both!

What you will need:

cactus mold
resin
assortment of glitter
jewelry head pins
round jewelry pliers and wire cutter
jump rings, earring findings and/or chain

Start by preparing your resin according to the manufacturers directions.  All resins are created different, so be sure to read the directions carefully.

Once you have your resin mixed, add in your glitter and stir to mix in in well.  Stir slowly as not to create a lot of bubbles, though they won't be too noticeable once the pendant is done.

Then slowly pour your resin into your mold.  If you are going to be making earrings, try to only fill the mold about halfway full so that the finished earrings aren't too heavy to wear.  But if you are making a necklace pendant you can fill your mold up to the top.

Next, take your head pins and bend down the top of the head at a 90* angle.  You will use this bent end to poke into the top of your cactus to create a hoop for hanging your pendant or earrings from.  I used a bit of duct tape to hold the pin in place while the resin hardens.

Then let your cacti harden.  Follow your manufacturers directions for curing the resin.  Mine took about 36 hours to be completely hardened.

Once they've hardened, pop them out of the mold.  Now it's time to make that head pin into a loop.  Take your round pliers and bend your pin so that it is bent up and then forward over the top and in front of the cactus.  Trim your head pin to about 1/2" long from the bend.  Then use your round pliers to form it into a circle.

Then you can either add a jump ring and/or a chain to make it into a necklace pendant, or add some earring findings and make them into earrings.
